The boot lever locks up straight during insertion. With the spiral fully inserted into the cork, the first step extracts about 7/8'' of the cork. Press the boot lever in and the second lever pulls the rest of the cork straight out. The secret is in the crescent in the handle that keeps the spring-loaded floating axis in a vertical position. I bought this thinking that since it was bright pink it would stand out and I would know which one was mine. It did stand out and got stolen from a guest at the first wedding I was working. This style opener is my favorite as it's easy to cut the foil off the top of the bottle very cleanly.
